Did you register it in your name? If its still in his name, then it belongs to him. You can try suing him for the papers so you can register it.

I agree, you should have gotten the papers in your name if he "gave it to you", if it is in his name, it is his jeep, not your jeep.

It does not matter what you left with, what did you come with ? Obviously not the jeep. When you leave, you leave with what is YOURS. The jeep at this point is his, guess you should have gotten title in your name before you left.
