    Goodman heat pump auxiliary heat
Why would a heat pump keep throwing the breaker and switching to auxiliary heat? It is 20 degrees outside, is this normal or is something possibly wrong?

It is not normal & there could be any of several causes. The fact it is tripping the breaker makes me believe there is an overload somewhere. Older Goodman heat pumps were particularly sensitive to having sufficient return air flow. Insuficient return air flow would cause compressor failure.
