I want to change a 220 outlet with 10 gage wire to a 110 outlet on a 15 amp breaker. I'm changing from an electric range to a gas range and only need 110V/15amp and it would be nice not to have to pull new wire.

You should have 2 hots and a ground. Convert one of the hots to a neutral and mark it as such. You will need to pigtail 14 AWG for the new outlet since you will never get 10 under a screw on an outlet. BTW today's power is 240 and 120. Cover the extra hole in the box with a fill plate -HD carries them. Be careful re -routing in the box.

There is no problem using a larger wire then the minimum called for for circuit.

If old cable is three wire use black as hot, white as neutral and tape off red at both ends.

If one of the hot wire is black and the other is white, no problem.

However, if the second conductor is anything but white or gray, you can not retask the conductor as a Neutral conductor, The Neutral conductor must be gray or white.

If you were using a #6 AWG conductor or larger, then you would be allowed to retask the conductor.

Be careful fitting those 10 AWG wires under the receptacle screws, #10 is so thick it's sometimes hard to do.
