My boy friend thinks I might be pregnant. I can't remember the last time we had sex and I don't really want to go and get a pregnancy test. Can I start taking the pill even though I'm not on my period? If I can, now often do I need to take it to make sure I'm not pregnant?

My doctor had told me that when I do take the pill it should be one a day around the same time. I haven't been on the pill for a while. My last period was approx 2weeks ago and I don't remember having sex in those last 2 weeks , if I can take it, and it's just to make sure I'm not pregnant, how long do I need to take it for?
