Edit: Unless you do things really, REALLY wrong... there are no long term problems... the sphincter is a just another muscle and good muscle tone is always a good thing.

To the OP... general rule here... if it hurts you are doing it wrong... as in one or more of the following - too much, too fast, and/or too little lube. The sphincter is semi-involuntary... but with time you can learn to consciencely control it... and thus not have contractions that are the root of most pain as you are just learning.

He needs to trim and file his nails... if he has really rough skin on his fingers, he needs to consider latex or nytril gloves (and lots of lube)... and condoms would not be a bad idea.
