We have a wonderful 6 year old son who the doctors said was not there, they had scheduled my wife for a D/C to clear up the issue.

She went to another doctor who said it was valid and we now have our son

My doctor wouldn't even search for a heartbeat until week 12. He won't do an ultrasound till week 20. Some doctors will do it when people are only 8 and 10 weeks along, but there is a greater chance that they won't be able to find the heartbeat if it is done before 12 weeks. So try not to panic, about 50% of the women I know who's doctors tried to locate a heartbeat before week 12, couldn't find one. But now they are all either very pregnant or already have a healthy child.
