There is a red knob on the gas valve, normal position is on but you need to turn it a quarter turn to PILOT. Once in the pilot position push it in and light the pilot with a flame, hold until the thermocouple heats up enough that the flame will continue after you stop pushing the knob in. Now turn the knob back to ON.
