I believe it would be easier if you described the situation, and people could go based on that. However, usually, if you have a feeling you're being played, you should seriously rethink a relationship with that person. Good relationships are based on trust.

He could be shy.. Or uninterested..

Maybe he prefers to speak to you in person rather then using an informal method of communication.

This isn't a bad thing. In fact, I commend him for it. Texting is ruining human relationships in my opinion.

I wouldn't expect him to text you first, since he wasn't doing it before. If you feel used, you probably are.
