Hi! I have a clogged kitchen sink in my apartment that hasn't responded to drain cleaners, plumbing, enzymes, etc. It's an old house, old sink, old iron pipes. I rent, so I'm not going to take the whole thing out and replace it with PVC.

There's lots of advice online about removing the p-trap and cleaning it. I want to do this but here's my problem (or maybe stupid question): the slip nuts are completely round, so I can't get a grip on them when I use a slip nut wrench. There are no little "spokes" or spots for gripping the surface. I tighten the wrench and it just slips, and scratches the iron on the pipes. Is brute force the answer? What do I need to do?

A pipe wrench, brute force, and a replacement p-trap at the ready.

Bandages for scraped knuckles are also advised.
