My plunger got separated from the trip lever assembly. How do I get the plunger out?

Remove the face plate item 3 in the picture , get a coat hanger wire make a hook and try it with see if that will work, if not you will need to disassemble the bath tub waste and remove it, see the image below, Thanks.
