My son in 17 (resides in TX) and the momma is 19(NC). Two years ago my son moved in with his father and went to NC and now is back in TX. I found out a month ago an ex girl friend was pregnant, she has now had the baby. My son know its wrong but he feels he should give up his rights since he has nothing to offer the baby and is still in high school. His father is supporting his decission. My son will be going to college as a full time student. My question is 1) How easy is it to give up paretal rights? 2) As a grandparent can I support my grandbaby until my son graduates from college?

Your son needs to own up to what he has done. He created a child. And the courts can order child support and he can pay it if he has the funds or not pay it and go into arrears and maybe end up paying on it for the rest of his life. He manned up to make the choice so now he has to man up to live by it. There is no just sign my rights away so I don't have to support my child.

You would have then learned that your son can't just give up his rights. The child's mother can and should file for child support. If the mother needs to apply for public assistance the state will, almost certainly, require that he pay.

Your son needs to plan on dealing with his decision to engage in sex with the girl and his responsibilities to his child.

No it is nearly impossible, if not impossible to give up his rights and esp to give up his obligation ( support) unless the mother is remarried ( and for a period of time) and the new husband wants to adopt.

So he has no obligation to ever see the child, or talk to the mother or child. But he will have an obligation to pay child support if the mother files for it.
You can give or loan the grandson money to pay his child support if you want, and you can send the child money anytime you want to help the child

I want to add a caveat here:

If your son AND his girlfriend decide together to place the child for adoption, THEN, and only then, can he relinquish his parental rights. It is done at the same time as the biological mother terminates parental rights.

Being 17 doesn't get you out of parental obligations. How can he possibly think giving up his rights and not paying support is better for the child? The child NEEDS his support--more than he NEEDS to go to college, I might add.

Most parents go to work full time to support their children, and go to college PART time to better themselves.

Guess which way he should be leaning?

PS--making him actually take responsibility for getting a girl pregnant may actually make him keep his penis in his pants until he can afford children next time.
