I have a rather loud laugh ('cackle') which can obviously not be changed - it is part of my personality. I have had several direct and indirect slanderous remarks made about my laugh from the directors (who are in their 60's/70's and very set in their ways and don't like noise) about how disruptive and disgusting my laugh is. Extremeley insulting and belittling jargon. To the point where I have been told off for it and to stop laughing. Am I correct in assuming this is discrimination, as I know it's not a term to use lightly. I don't intend to do anything just found it embarrassing when remarks are made in full company of my peirs and colleagues and would delight in a bit of professional advice.

It may be "discrimination" but not illegal, they could treat you different for having red hair, or for having a beard, but it is perfectly legal. They can not discriminate against you in the US for a reason that is a protected right.

Discrimination covers race, creed, and color, and handicapped people. Not the volume of your laugh. Sorry.

No, you are not correct in assuming this is discrimination. You can be warned and or terminated for anything (and just about everything) that is disruptive to the workplace.
