    KISS

The problem may be an internal leak rather than an external one. Example: The diaphram of the EGR valve is bad.

Generally, you can find leaks with a tachometer and carb spray. Some code readers may be able to read parameters. Sometime you can tell if the RPM changes.

Sometimes, you can pull hoses to devices and plug them ans see if the idle smooths out.

Power brake boosters is another place leaks occur.

A bad PCV valve will do the same thing. If you pulled the hose to the PVC valve and plugged it, the idle would get better. Carb spray would not detect this one.
