Does code specify certain dimension for relocating a panel in KY?
My Mom and Dad had a house fire and we had to gut the finished basement as well as part of the upstairs. In the process of repairing and replacing the wiring, I want to upgrade their service from 200 amps to 400 amps with 2-200 amp panels. One panel would be upstairs and the other one would be downstairs for the finished basement.

I understand that I can possible use a double lug nut at the meter base to feed both panels, but do I have to have a disconnect at the meter base or are the main disconnect in the panels OK? What other options would I have to split 400 amps to 2-200 amp panels?

What are the code guide lines for locating a 200 amp panel in living space? As planned the panel is inserted into the wall so that it will be flush with the drywall. What other things should I consider?

    Thanks

The utility dictates the requirements for the service and even may specify the bases that may be used. They specify the height of the meter, etc.

The outside disconnect is typically required when x' of cable exists past the meter. I don't now what x is. (10' possibly)

You may be able to feed the house with a meter base containing two 200 A breakers if the base is approved by the utility. In our area the bases have to have a sticker. All local distributers will have the approved bases and stickers for the surrounding area.

There are some clearance issues for the panel. Again, I hope someone will come around with the numbers.

You cannot locate a panel in a closet.

There is a sticky on how to read the NEC online in the beginning of the "Electrical & Lighting" topic.

Generally the bonding will be done at the first disconnect. Usually two ground rods are required.

Copper plumbing must also be bonded too.

Hopefully, someone will come around and fill in the particulars.

Here is a thread mentioning the clearances: https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/electr...ion-97671.html

Disconnects are needed immediately as the cable from the meter enters a building, 10 feet of exposed cable inside is the max an inspector will ever allow, if that.
When panels are in a building any distance beyond that. Disconnects are installed at the meters. There are 320 amp meter sockets for residential that have two 200 amp breakers built-in just for this type of service.

Check with your utility for the type meter enclosures are allowed, check the manufacturers they allow, one or more of them will offer that type of meter /disconnect.

Not just copper piping, but all metal piping needs to be bonded. If you have a metal water line, it will be your primary grounding electrode.
