The easiest way to solve your equations is by equating them (similar to substitution).

y=3x-8
y=4-x

Which means that :

y=3x-8 =4-x

Hence:

3x-8 =4-x

Then you solve for x.

If you want to go for elimination, then subtract the second equation from the first:
