My boyfriend has a 9 year old girl that he has not seen. The mother never even told him that she was pregnant until after the child was born. He lives in Florida and she lives in Nebraska. She does not want him to have any contact with the child or her, but she has applied for welfare assistance and now they want him to pay child support. He is not even sure if the child is his and wants to know how he can give up his parental rights to the child as he is so far away and the child is actually doing really well where she is and does not want to confuse her, or make her life worse. Please help.

If he doesn't think the child is his or even if he does he needs to get a DNA test done through the courts. If he is just looking to get out of child support then he has another thing coming. She is either going to have to marry and have the new husband adopt or he's going to have to pay. Why should "we" the taxpayer pay for his child ?

She (his daughter) is eventually going to want to know about him anyway--why not start getting to know her NOW? At 9, you can bet she's asked questions about her daddy long before now.

I would consult a lawyer. In some states, he may be past the time he can contest paternity. If not, he can always get a court-ordered DNA test done.

Either way, if this is his child, he has a responsibility toward her. If he doesn't want to do visitations and get to know her--fine. But he DOES need to take responsibility for her expenses. That's what one does when one is an adult--take responsibility for your actions.
