I am adding an upstairs bath with a shower/toilet and vanity. The 3" drain pipe comes up from below near the corner of the room. From there i will run a 3" drain line horizontally to pick up a shower drain approximately 18" from the vertical drain pipe and a toilet approxiamately 48" from the vertical drain. The vanity on the opposite side of the room will have a 2" drain that will tie in near the vertical drain and will be vented with an air admission valve.

For the shower and toilet will one vent 2" line located between the shower drain and the vertical drain pipe be sufficient for proper drainage?

Are there any fixtures connected onto that 3" drain pipe that "comes up from below near the corner of the room"?

If the bathroom below connects into this stack then you cannot connect into this stack upstairs as it will be a VENT STACK for the bathroom below and you can't connect into the vent stack with waste from above.

If this is the case, then you will need to go below the waste pipes from the bathroom and cut into the waste piping down therer and send up a new 3" PVC waste stack. You would pipe the bathroom up and either connect the 2" vent from the bathroom into the existing vent stack (YUP! OK to do with vent on vent) or penentrate the roof separately with a 2" vent.

Let me know more about the pipe in the corner. Oh!! And yes, one 2" vent for the toilet and the shower will be fine as long as they allow WET VENTING in your area...BUT it needs to be done quite specifically... ;)

Mass plumber - Thanks for your reply.

The 3" line from below runs into the ground and then Y's into the main drain line going to the street. There are no fixtures on it and the other bath and fixtures from downstairs vent to the attic on separate lines. I plan to vent this new line with a new vent line through the roof. We are in a rural area with no codes in force.

How do I need to run the vent for both the toilet and shower?
