My top loader still spins but won't agitate. The machine emits a loud clack at the same tempo of the agitator changing directions.

If this sounds like the transmission, what is involved in replacing it?

Sounds like a new machine is needed, cost of a transmission installed by say a Sears tech would be more than a new machine. You didn't say how old the washer was, life expectancy is about 6 yrs agerage.
