I was just wondering when a bulloxer will start her period... she is 4 months and we will be getting her spade but would like to know if we waited until she is 5 months will we still be OK and her period won't have started

I would ask my Vet - one of my dogs was spayed at 5 months. She had already gone into her cycle. The other one was just 3 months.

It depends on the Vet, the size of the dog and probably other factors.

A lot of vets are spaying and neutering much earlier now. Some vets even spay as young as 2 months depending on the health of the dog.

Studies have shown that a dog that is spayed before she goes into her fist heat has a less likely chance of cancer later on in life.

It's really up to your vet though, so ask the next time you go in.

Also, I want to say that I'm very happy you're having her spayed, it's the responsible thing to do. :)

And in my area rescue groups which require neutering/spaying are doing it before the dog is adopted - sometimes as young as 6 weeks. Only guarantee that the animal will, in fact, be neutered/spayed and won't have a litter.

Our shelters do that too. I think 6 weeks is a bit young but I do understand why they do it. Too many dogs in the shelter already and too many irresponsible people that just have to have that one litter.

If the dog is healthy there usually aren't any problems. Of course there's always a risk, however small, with any surgery, but the health benefits far outweigh the risks. :)

My vet prefers to wait until 5-6 months. However, a friends pup just got her first cycle at 5 1/2 months and had to delay the surgery. Talk to your vet and discuss their beliefs on when to proceed. Unfortunately you never know exactly when it will come...
