Honda Civic 95 1.3 starting but cutting out straight away
    Hello all,

    I have a Honda Civic 1.3 on a M plate.

I was driving home the other day and I lost all drive from the engine, it felt like it had been knocked into neutral! When I came to a stop the engine cut out. I tried starting it and it will start for about 2 seconds and then cut out again.

I had the breakdown recovery people to come have a look at it and the guy told me it could be the fuel pump. I have checked the fuel pump and its not that.

While the breakdown guy was at my house we tried starting the car and it did but that was only because I kept pumping the gas pedal. As soon as I stopped pumping the pedal the engine cuts out again!

The breakdown guy also said it could be electrical, but he said that's unlikely because the car starts but only when I'm pumping the pedal.

I really don't want to be throwing loads of money at the car just to find the fault.

Ive had the car for a year now and I've never had a problem until now!

    Please help!

If you can hear the fuel pump run, when the ignition switch is turned to ON, it's likely fine. Honda fuel pumps are extremely reliable--I've never seen one fail. However, you may want to change the fuel filter.

In 90% or more of these situations, the problem is electrical-related, not fuel. The most common problem, in situations like your's, is Ignition Control Module and coil failure. I recommend replacing them every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first. Here's how to do it yourself:
