I have a Janitrol ac system in my home. We have noticed that it is freezing up inside our basement and the lines are backed up with water and are leaking. We just had the compressor replaced about a month ago and freeon was put in.. What could be causing this to happen and is there something that we can do to keep from calling a costly repair man.. Possibilities... 1) Inadequate indoor airflow. Dirty/clogged air filter and/or indoor coil, blocked supply and/or return air ducts, blower not operating correctly. 2) Inadequate refrigerant charge, usually due to leakage. System pressures/temperatures are lower than intended design, causing airborn water vapor to freeze on indoor coil surface (rather than just collecting and draining away). 3) Underloaded system. Operating the air conditioner when indoor and/or outdoor temperatures are relatively low.

Thanks for the reply KC13. Is there anyway that we can check the freeon to see if it is leaking or is low. We have checked the coils are they are clean and have changed the filter.. still no change

Was the filter very dirty? Did you give the unit time to unthaw??

If you just had the compressor replaced, the entire system should have been evacuated (pumped into a vacuum) with a micron gauge to assure against leaks. Look for oily residue where the new work was performed. If present, try applying some liquid soap to the area. Bubbles indicate leakage (if there is still Freon in the system).

Feeon is good and no leaks. All vents are flowing freely with none of them blocked off. Air filter is clean and we checked the coil to make sure it was not dirty.. it was clean also.. still freezing up in basement and LOTS of condensation coming off the line that flows from the outside unit to the inside.. HELP!!

I would bet that the unit is not charged properly. I would call the company back that replaced the compressor since they would have charged the system after they installed the compressor. Since you have already checked the underside of the coil and said it was clean,and you said the filter was changed and the air was flowing then it would almost have to be charged incorrectly. This needs to be checked by a professional since they have the required EPA permit required to remove or dispense refrigerant. They also have the guages and know how to read them to judge the superheat or subcooling depending upon what type metering device you have installed for your indoor coil.

What I do wonder about is the fact that if the coil is frozen over on the inside usually no air movement will be felt since the coil freezing blocks all the air flow. Could be you could shed some light on this subject since I have never seen a system move air at all when the coil is frozen up UNLESS the coil is installed improperly allowing too much air to bypass the coil itself. If that is the problem then that would also cause the coil to freeze up.
