What can I do to up the horsepower without breaking the bank?

Start using synthetic lubricants (e.g. Mobil 1) all around:

. Engine oil

. Automatic transmission fluid--ATF+4 is a synthetic product.

. Differential--huge resistance in differentials.

This will likely increase horsepower 8 to 10%, improve protection, as well as increase gas mileage. Change engine oil and filter every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. With UOA, mileage can be greatly extended.

Typically, one the first changes is to install a performance air induction system--doesn't cost much. Chip experience varies a lot--check this out very carefully, before buying.

That's a tough question to answer honestly. It varies, depending on a number of factors, over the performance curve. Most people I know who have changed chips have been disappointed. Performance has gone up, in some cases, but gas mileage dropped substantially in others. Most wish they had saved their $450. It's not unusual for people to be disappointed, for one reason or another, and switch back to OEM. Only one super smart Texas A&M graduate mechanical engineer I know has been really happy. He tuned his with his laptop and has various switch settings (1 through 4), depending upon rpm. He races Ford Mustangs. I have yet to meet anyone who changed the chip in a diesel truck be really happy about it--performance and mpg tends to be very disappointing. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. Others may chime in with their experience.
