89 civic won't run or start

I have an 89 civic that will run and then out of the blue it will die,sometimes it will restart and sometimes it won't.I can hear the fuel pump running and I can smell gas.It seems to be electrical somehow.It seems to have a mind of its own.Any help would be appreciated.
