    Repair or Replace?
    Hi,
I have a Heil heat pump system that was installed in my new townhouse in 2003.Air handler is 2001 model and Heat pump is 2003 model.
Since 2005 I have had to have numerouse repairs made to this system including a new circuit board condenser, zone dampers (2), replacing the evaporator coil in 2006 and now I found out that I have another coil leak.
Sunday, the company (with whom I have the preventive maintenance with) came out to add 12 pounds of freon. And made an appointment to perform a leak search next week.
I have spent $3,000.00 to date on this system.
I have gotten a couple of estimates to replace my system. Should I consider calling another company to come out to repair the leak or consider getting a new system?
Also should I stay with the R22 or upgrade to the R410a system?

It must be a huge system to hold 12 pounds of refrigerant even if it was completely empty. It was probably a 10 SEER system also and they hold less refrigerant than the newer 13 SEER systems.

BTW I would be contacting Heil about that evaporator that was replaced in 2006.

BTW I have no idea when the home was built but I am sure the Heil equipment had a 5 year parts warranty. 2003 to 2008 is 5 years so the coil that was replaced in 2006 was probably under warranty at the time.

I do not think I would ever call your other repair company again. It is a toss up as to what to do with your system. If you have the $$ I suggest getting 2 or 3 estimates from reliable HVAC contractors. Call your friends and seek there imput as who they have used in the past and who they were satisfied with. Also call the BBB and chech the complaint record for the companys who bid your job.

R-410 is the wave of the future but make sure the company you choose has been certified by the manufacturer that they attended there R-410 class. Refrigerants all do the same job but R-410 jobs needs a bit more attention for proper install. If you decide to do a new R-410 system make sure they replace the line set also. They can be flushed to prevent R-22/oil cross contamination but when you are spending the big bucks for a new system get a new line set.
