I just found out my ex is claiming our son as a dependent, our son does not qualify as a dependent. Because of the stimulus package the IRS may catch this. Should I also contact the IRS with this info? My ex has been claiming our son for six years even though son is 37, not disabled and ex does not support him. I don't file taxes because of low income so does not affect me only in that his claiming our son illegally is hurting the government. He will go on year after year claiming our son, as a good citizen this is unacceptable to me.

Did you also claim your son? If you both claimed him, IRS will find out very quickly and there is no need to blow the whistle.

Would you report this just to make a point with your ex or to get him in trouble or because somehow it would benefit you?

Otherwise, quite frankly, unless you or your son are harmed by this, I would do nothing.
