    Hello,
    Recently bought a 1995 Chevy Silverado 4x4 (5.7L) z71. Well, yesterday when I was on my way to work, it started fine, but when I got about a block from work, it seemed like the tranny got slow... so naturally I reduced speed to about 10 mph and parked at work. That evening when I left work to go home for dinner, it started right up and ran fine. I left it run for about 15 minutes before I left. ( -10*F). Got in the truck after 15 minutes, shifted into reverse, and gave it some gas. Nothing happened. Just reved the engine up. Put into drive, same thing, revved the engine. Put into neutural, could push it just fine. Checked the tranny fluid, and it was fine. Any ideas what it could be? Don't think it's the linkage because it did shift into neuatral just fine. Truck has 146,000 miles on it by the way. Any one with a good idea of what maybe wrong please let me know, and if u know how much it cost to fix that problem, please share. Thank you.

    I have a '95 Silverado 2WD, w/ 197,000+. The transmission is the same except for the transfer case.
    Mine failed similarly: losing reverse and starting to shift poorly, no reverse, no second or no fourth.
    Your problem, depending upon mileage, is likely a failed Reaction Sun Shell. This particular component is critical for band to internal clutch engagement. If the shell has become overheated or the spline has sheared off, it will need to be replaced.

    For proper diagnosis, the truck will need to be inspected by a qualified trans tech.

    If that is the piece that failed (and diagnosis is required to verify) that part costs less than sixty bucks, but the labor can run into the upper teens of hours, possibly between 15 to 18 or more for a 4x4. Depending on your local shop rates, the final cost will vary.
    Compare the cost of repair/rebuild and the cost to simply swap a used transmission. You will save hours worth of labor, but you may not know the history of the used tranny.
    Ask your mechanic and get more than one opinion.
    Ask yourself if you think the truck is worth it... any other pending issues, etc... You know what I mean?
