Hi. Good for you for wanting to go blonde. I was blonde for 15 years and tried to go to another color, and now I'm in the middle of a hair disaster! Ick!

So, if you want to go blonde, here's some things I have to say:
    1. Go to a professional. Do NOT do it yourself.
    2. If your hair is already darker than a light brown, you need to think about the long term maintenance commitment. It's a lot to keep it looking good. I went every 4 weeks to get my roots touched up. You have to be ready.
    3. Make sure it will work for you. If you have a dark or olive complexion, you may look bad blonde. Usually, if you have a dark blonde hair naturally or had blonde hair as a child, going blonder or blonde highlights will look good on you. OR, if you have a light or fair complexion, blonde will work for you. If you have red tones in your skin, you need an ashy or cool toned blonde to balance that. If you have cool tones in your skin, you can go with a golden blonde or a warmer blonde.
    4. I recommend starting slowly, with a few highlights by a professional. Tell them you want a flash foil. If you like it, go for more next time. You can always add, but you can not easily take away.

Have fun! I can't wait until I get myself back to blonde from this horrendous mess I'm in myself!

Well it depends on your skin color. U don't want to dye all your hair super blonde if your really pale. But I think if your tan it would look good. Otherwise just do blonde streaks through your hair=)

It depends on your skin colour and your hair colour now. Im quite pale and my hair is medium with just normal highlights but its hard to get blonde in to dark hair. Dark haired peoples highlights look like an orangy yellow if their not done proffesionally.

I'm using this board, and I bet others are as well, because for some reason or another we want to do it ourselves. Listen, I mean no disrespect, especially to PrettyLady, who obviously knows her business and is so generous and forthcoming with her knowledge. But I'm real sick of hearing that I should go to a professional. My MANY experiences with professionals have been disastrous. My last straw was a hairdresser who got it right the first time and I trustingly kept going to her until I noticed my hair was getting redder and redder. When I confronted her about it she sheepishly admitted she was gradually changing the formula we'd agreed upon. No reason but she thought it might look nice. As far as I'm concerned, I can mess up my own hair for a lot less $$$.

My natural hair is dark brown, now with about 25% gray. It's fine, thin and porous. I can get away with medium brown haircolor that is supposed to wash out after 28 shampoos because it doesn't really wash out on my hair.

I've had blonde hair that I did myself at home. It didn't require 2 processes. I just used one of the ultrablonde one step permanent colors. I used it the first time overall, and touched up every 4 weeks - only the roots. I used an ash shade because my skin tones are warm and warm haircolor looks funny on me. I ended up with a rather natural looking medium blonde after coloring the roots the 3rd or 4th time. Before it lightened to that degree it was a caramel color - but real natural looking. Like I said, my natural hair is dark brown so I was pleased to find soemthing that worked without me having to use that awful blue powder junk that feels like sand in your hair to first pre-lighten it.

May or may not work for you if your hair is not as porous as mine.
