I have an old heating thermostat which you can only set to one temperature. We have had it set at 69 degrees for the past couple of months without ever changing it. For the most part, we have been quite comfortable. We have never been cold but sometimes we get a little too warm. I terms of economics, is it better to maintain one temperature all of the time or would it be better if we raised and lowered it as needed. Thanks for your advice. Everything we do is done with limited income in mind and lowering or increasing our heating (gas) bill would not be a very good thing. Thanks again!

The lower the temperature the more energy savings. Real simple.

I understand that! You are not answering my question. Is it better to move the thermostat up and down or to leave it at one setting? My husband claims it is better to find one single setting and to leave it alone.

HVAC1000 and I agree on this one. The lower the setting, the less gas you use. Crank it down when you won't be around, and the furnace will run less. Yes it will have to run a while when you turn it up again, but less than it would have if you left it up.

Many people turn it down at night and put an extra blanket on the bed.

I understood your question.

When you turn it down you will save energy because at a lower temperature you will be heating the structure less (SAVE GAS) When you heat it back up you will never use the amount of gas you would have used as if you left it at the same temperature.
Sorry to say but your husband is wrong. He is probably wrong on purpose because he does not like it when the thermostat is lowered to save energy because he gets cold.
Husbands and wife's are like that with the thermostat that is why this house uses a computer to control all three zones/ three thermostats. My wife cannot change the temperature with out the password.LOL
