Hello All, My house is very old and the main disconnect is a 100 amp fuse panel with no ground. I am adding a 50 amp subpanel in the attached garage with 6 circuits. The run to the subpanel is 70 ft of 6/3G. I have added a grounding rod for the subpanel @ the main disconnect. It appears that the neutral on the main is bonded to the enclosure. So my question is: In order to keep the neutral and the ground separate for the subpanel must I insulate the ground wire from the main panel enclosure and wire directly to the ground rod?

A little difficult to follow you. Your saying all the right words but in an odd order.

The service may be grounded to a city water system also, so don't assume the system is not grounded.

The ground rod or rods or ground to city water is needed to be connect to the neutral bar at the main service disconnect or at the neutral of the meter.

The neutral and equipment ground wire from the subpanel need to connect to the main neutral bar in the panel if the main is in that panel.

At the subpanel, the neutral wire will connect to the neutral bar that is insulated, and not boneded to the metal can.

An equipment ground bar must be added to the subpanel, bolted directly to the metal can using machine screws ,and connect all bare ground to that bar.
