I'm moving my toilet over about 12", have removed the old 4" cast iron pipe back to the bell of the "Y", where I need to attach new 4" PVC fittings and pipe. I got a rubber donut that fits nicely into the bell, but I can't get the PVC pipe to fit into it. The PVC pipe fits nicely into the rubber when the rubber isn't in the bell. I tried soaping it, leverage, and muscle, but couldn't get it in. It's driving me crazy. You probably have a simple solution, right? Please?

Leverage and clear silicone as a lubricant has always worked for me.

Beveling the end that is going into the Ty-Seal with a angle grinder also helps.

One more thing -- If you need to use a longer piece of pipe to make levering it in easier, then just cut off the excess pipe.

Growler gave you good advice. Here's a step by step! First insert the donut into the hub of the bell. Next shave off the first few ridges off the donut and take a file and bevel the edge of the PVC. Now coat the Donut and PVC with Dual-Tite Lubricant or Silicon Jel and using a long piece of pipe or a Johnson Bar lever the pipe into the donut. Make sure the PVC is straight and not cocked when you began to lever it in. Good luck, Tom

I got the rubber donut into the bell, squeezed the pipe into it with a 2x4 over the pipe end, wrapped rope around the 2x4 ends and twisted it tight on the backside of the bell. Feeling inside, the pipe is over the last ridge in one area, but not quite over it in another area because the cut is very slightly angled. Do I need to be completely past the end of the rubber, or is up to it OK? Thanks..
