Most transmission problems are a function of not changing the fluid and filter frequently enough. With conventional fluid, change it every 24,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. Because of the expense and problematic nature of most automatic transaxles, I recommend the extra margin of safety full-synthetic transmission fluids afford; e.g. Amsoil or Mobil 1. With synthetic ATF, change the fluid and filter every 36,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first. This advice may not help you now, but it will in the future. Most automatic transmissions are engineered to go between 125,000 and 150,000 miles, provided they are properly maintained. I offer this information to provide perspective on your current situation. A rebuilt will likely run around $1,800.
