Where is the Artist in you?
"We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere." (Tim McGraw)

As a continuation of the Artist in you thread....

"Sometimes I look at a painting by another artist and I see a universal language that we're both trying to express. I feel that we're on the same path, that we share the same intentions, and that's inspiring to me. " (Birgit O'Connor)

"At moments we are all artists."(Arnold Bennett)

"The wonder is that artists can stimulate other artists." (Nick Farbacher)

"The artist is not a different kind of person, but every person is a different kind of artist." (Eric Gill)

All the quotes above make a ripple in my soul and they are true,I couldn't resist sharing them.

Where are you my dear Art friends?

Would love to see your Artwork.

I was wondering and waiting to see what you were going to do, firmbeliever about continuing "The Artist in you!" thread in some way or not.

Is this thread to be all-inclusive such as involving those who are in the performing, literary, craft, and theater arts, etc. That is just a short list. There is an artist of some kind in all of us...

You already know what kind of artist that I am...

    Thank you!

    Hi Clough,

I am not sure about All-Inclusive,it is up to you as the Art expert being an artist in so many fields :) you should decide.

My field is Art on paper or fabrics, drawing, painting, crafts in general etc,so I am less familiar with performing Arts.

Maybe you could start one in performing Arts, including Theatre, music etc

Thank you for your reply, firmbeliever and being open to some discussion concerning where we are headed after the major success of "The Artist in you!" thread.

I have many thoughts and feelings about arts of many kinds and would like to see each thread in the Art topic area be successful and an enriching thing for anyone seeking information about any kind of art.

As such, I will post more here to share with you about some of my ideas and also yours after I have had a good nights rest and can think more clearly.

    Thanks!

P.S. By the way, the surprise that I have for everyone concerning "The Artist in you!" thread is almost completed and should be posted within the next few days! :) Once you have seen it, you will understand more of what I am meaning with what I will post next on this thread.

This is it so far,now I got to tell you, I like old and ratty looking things...
Anything that isn't perfect, is PERFECT to me.
So the most important thing here is what it says, it has been very special to me ever since the day I saw it in Allhearts sig. I have a few finishing touches to do to it, but I think it looks nice imperfect and plain. Hope to see some "stuff" from all of you as well!
Firmy, I know you have been busy with your cards and boxes, but it would be really great to see what you have been busy doing!;)

    EDIT::::::::::::::
Getting frustrated trying to get my pic to load... LOL this may take a while or another puter... :)

Hey artlovers! I've been browsing the 'Artist in you' threads and wow is there some talent there huh? I was wondering, as I am not too familiar with adding pics, what size do they need to be? At the moment they're all 1920x2560 or 1.60mb. Is this too big?

Yes, that's too big. But, we do have people here who can help you to learn how to re-size your images so that you can post them on this site.

No. Please don't post what you have to offer in one of the computer sections. There are various art topic areas where you can and will be able to post images of your art. Thank you!

Hey there, giving a little unsolicited help here but when I was learning to post images, I sure did appreciate those who jumped right in to help me. If you have scanned your work or have photo images saved to a file folder, make sure they are saved as .jpg files and just open them each up in a photo program you have, just left click once to select image, then right click and it will give you the options of programs. Most photo programs have at the top either Image or Edit where you can get drop down box and it will say Resize. Choose pixels and the largest you can post on this site is 750 pixels. I usually make mine 450, length or width, which ever is largest. 600 actually shows up much better. Just preference. Once you have resized it, don't forget to go up to file and "Save As" and just add the word resized at the end of title, making sure at the bottom it says .jpg

Once you save it that way, using "Save As", you now have the original in your file as well as the newly sized image. Then when you post, select "Go Advanced", it gives you the option then to browse to find your image and attach it and you can also type in a description or comments as usual to post. I have a longer version of instructions if this is not clear enough. I am anxious to see images you have to share. :p

Well, FINALLY got all the dramas sorted with my images. Thanks for the advice Jrebel, I don't appear to have any option for resizing once the image has been right-clicked so eventually (with a little help from a more PC savvy other half) I realised that it can be done by opening the image in paint, then clicking on the image icon there. Modern technology aye! Hrrumph.

Aaanywho, I have always been a doodler and probably always will be. I'm a fan of the pencil but have been playing with pastels a bit since an artcourse I did a year ago.
You can see from this "Zeus" portrait where the light glares I need to brush up on my overcorrecting. Something my tutor gave me stick about... "you don't need to use a rubber or putty!" Lol. Sorry Mehrdad, guess I didn't listen!

Once I take photos of my other work, I'll upload some of them too. Hope someone likes 'em anyway and please give some critique. Keep up the great work guys!

A fantastic line from a fantastic poet.
But art is an irrelevance I completely love.

Here's a few things I've made. None of them recent unfortunately.

I love this image of "Zeus". I took the liberty of lightening it up just a bit so that I could see more of the detail of the face. I am posting it. I hope that is okay. It is just a wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing it. If you want me to delete my post of it lightened I will but it just has so much to offer. Perhaps it was just dark on my computer screen. I would love seeing more of your work. Please explain more about the "rubber and putty". Is this a mixed medium piece. I am a bit confused. Is this pencil and pastel?

That was clever. Never thought of lightening it, thanks! A rubber (in my neck of the woods) is an eraser and the putty is just a type of eraser well suited to pencil and charcoal. I prefer it the most other erasers as it leaves no 'crumbs' when applied and can be shaped into a sharp tip for small areas, but my tutor doesn't like to use them at all especially as he's so skilled but the drawing surface can be damaged too if correcting is overdone. I personally like the effect they can create if used in the right way and well, I have a long way to go to be as skilled as him lol! The whole drawing was done in pencil, with the exception of the ball, which was pastel.

Well new friend, it wouldn't allow me to "Rate the Answer" since I just did earlier on one of your posts. I was just going to say that I hope you realize how much talent you do have.

I use a "Design Kneaded Rubber" which I imagine is what you are describing. You use it to give a clean area to use, doesn't leave any traces of 'crumbs' and is great for highlighting by way of removing graphite already applied to an area. I agree with you that using this gives a great effect if used properly.

I am anxious to view other art works you might want to share. I would enjoy knowing also if you do this professionally on any level, art shows, do commission work, or take classes and do these pieces just for gifts.

It is just exciting seeing this great work. We all need inspiration and you have inspired me! Thank you.

Hi all, been having problems with my internet, hence the reason for my absence. Nice to hear my work is putting a positive vibe out there. Have been really busy lately so still don't have pics available of other work but won't forget!
I started doing the odd drawing for friends a long time ago, then thought I'd have a go at turning it into a business on the sideline which was OK for a while but with family pressures etc I slowed it right down to just a hobbie again.
Anyway, will see you all soon guys, chow for now. :)

I love your work Moparb! You really did an amazing job. Are these both pencil or charcoal pencil? Also, what paper did you work on to have the color on your great grandfatehr? That made for interesting viewing! He is a very nice looking man and the dog is a sweetie!

Thanks Jrebel and others for nice comments. I actually use Fabriano paper which is white (I had my camera set wrong and it didn't compensate for the tungsten light)... should have used a sepia coloured paper though huh, does suit the era of the photo right?:D
They are both pencil as I'm still not too comfortable with charcoal yet. I find it more difficult to use than pencil. Is there anyone out there who has some charcoal art to share?

I am still enthralled with the drawing of your great grandfather. The eyes follow the viewer, you have a soft touch which I do not possess but so enjoy viewing work of those who do. I haven't worked in charcoal since college years. My main medium is pencil, Design Ebony Jet Black #14420 and #6325.

Is Fabriano paper a watercolor paper for watercolor, charcoal and pencil? Wondering if that is just a brand name? I loved the sepia look. I just assumed the paper was sepia in color. It really has such a nice mood to it, viewing it in sepia. Sepia always warms up a drawing.

Please post more of your work. :p

I totally agree! :) Art is something that encompasses a number of areas or genres, if you will - music, drama, crafts, theater, dance, visual and performing arts of various kinds, etc. My main art is music, but I also do art in a number of other areas and genres...

As such, you might want to wait to post something that is audible until I start a central artist thread for artists of all types. That "tree" could then have many "branches..." Then, woven together...

But, at the same time, that does not preclude you posting something audible on a thread such as this. Artwork of any kind, as far as I am concerned, could be posted on multiple threads. That way, that Art topic area could be the most complete and very much like an art encyclopedia, indexed, referenced, etc. for years to come!

I too, would appreciate knowing if what you have is that which you have created yourself.

    Thanks!

This is interesting, Sean. I would appreciate you sharing with us as to why you think that "music is the most beautiful thing form of art..." It's interesting to me, that you have that perspective, because you are someone who works so much producing those things that are in the visual arts. Please do share.

    Dear musicians,
I wrote this because so many times when I have been going about my day, walking my dogs, driving down a street or going in a shop. I hear the music of someone and think how beautiful. I stop and savior it for a moment, usually never knowing where it comes from. Maybe to you the musician you are just practicing, passing time or performing. Know this, even if just, for a small fleeting moment you helped someone have a nicer day.

    Unseen
I may not know where you are,
Invisible, coming to me through the thin air.
The gentle, rhythmic sound of your voice,
Lulling me peacefully as I go about my day.

    I hear you, unseen

    I hear your instruments
    In perfect tune and harmony.
Maybe you are a star, a singer in a bar,
The girl down the street, or a member in a choir
    I hear you, unseen

I don't know who you are ,to me it matters not, as I go about my day.
In my yard, pulling weeds, planting flowers or
Sitting on my porch rocking back forth.

    I hear you, unseen

When I throw open my windows on a warm breezy day,
To clean my house and chase the gloom away.

    I hear you, unseen.

Driving down the street at a stop sign,
The strains of music coming from somewhere.

    I hear you, unseen

To you your just practicing or getting ready for a show,
But the joy you are giving me, you probably will never know.
We may have seen each other or not,
I may never attend your show or meet you.

But as I hear you, unseen.
    I thank you, unheard.
    Geri

Clough, in answer to your question, music has always touched me and influenced me far more than visual arts. It is what I cry to, and it is always playing, as I rest, while I do art, when I am on a computer, while I read, etc, I cannot live without music, music just to me expresses so much more and touches so much deeper into the soul than visual art, I could live without my eyes, without any sense, except my hearing, without music, I would wither and die. One of my greatest regrets in life is that I have never had a voice or a talent for singing. I am currently learning to play guitar, and I want to learn piano, because I cry whenever I hear sad piano being played.

    Thank you so much.

More people feel this way (the way Cal expressed so eloquently) than you know. We express a lot of times on this site, the visual arts we are involved in and we are able to put an image on the site that one can view but perhaps do not include the other types of art often enough although a few of us have tried to have the art threads to be all inclusive of all forms of art. It is good to also have threads that are subject or art specific to address questions in more detail but having been one who attempted "violin, guitar, ukele, piano and singing", and enjoyed it but never excelled in any of them, I would love to hear more of what inspires performing aritists, what drives you to excel? What do you go through emotionally when you are in front of people performing your art, whether it is music, acting, etc. Some, like myself, are content to paint or draw and not be in front of people but generally while we are creating our art, we are listening and being moved by music being played in the background. From the beginning of time, beat of music, rhythm and movement has been at the very core of our being. Even though I do not perform, how I admire and respect those who do. Please share your background with us and whatever you feel free to share with us regarding your music.

I sign for the deaf and what so many people miss is that the deaf can feel the beat of the music, even though they do not "hear with the ears" the music, they hear the music in their hearts. They feel the vibrations, the variations of vibrations, the intensity of vibrations sometimes by placing their hand on the piano or guitar, or just feel it through the floor. Music is a ministering balm. My son played the guitar and sang to his children while his wife was pregnant with them. When they would get fussy when they were babies, he would get the guitar out and play like he did then when they were still in the womb and they would immediately calm down. One day, my precious daughter-in-law (and one of my best friends in life) was at home with the baby and he got fussy and she was getting nervous being a new mother and my son was a work. She knows nothing about music in terms of playing music but got my son's guitar out and simply strummed, did not play chords, simply strummed and the baby became calm. Isn't that just amazing? It is to me!
