Yes, I've been in a lot of different types of shows and music-making groups...

Have you studied some of material that we were going to work on?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 12:03 AM
    Shiang

What are the shows you've been in like?

    Yes, of course! :]

Okay! That's great that you've studied some of the material! That will help you to be able to play your song and understand what you're doing!

The shows that I've been in on stage or in the pit orchestra have been musicals, like Cats, Oklahoma, South Pacific, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz, etc.

They've been professional, community, college and school theater productions.

I have to make sure that it sticks with me haha. Is it okay if I practice playing those nursery songs?

Ohh I haven't heard of most of them on that list. But I do like musicals, they are very interesting.

I'm sure that it will stick with you because you are a person who tries really hard and we'll also work on those things here.

Yes, it's okay to practice the nursery songs!

What do you suppose the name of the chord is in the image below that I've circled? It's a Major chord and the name of it is what the letter name of the note on the bottom is.

Okay, though I don't want to like practice them, and then find out I've been doing it wrong the whole time haha.

Uhm that would be E, right?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 12:32 AM
    Clough

If it was the treble clef, you would be correct. It would be an "E". But, the bass clef is different. Please use one of the charts that you have to figure it out.

    Thanks!

    Shiang

    Oh! Would it be "G"?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 12:37 AM
    Clough

Wow! You're awesome! That's correct! What do you think the middle note of the chord is, please? It's on the third line up.

    Shiang

"E"? How do I tell which one it is, if it's upside down?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 12:44 AM
    Clough

It matters where the head (small oval shape) on the note is located. If the stem (line on the side of the note) goes up or down doesn't matter as far as the letter name is concerned.

So the bottom of the three little circles is what matters?

    Yes I remember that.
  • Apr 29, 2009, 01:03 AM
    Clough

Yes, the bottom little circle is on the "G" line.

Since we had been talking about musicals, I thought that you might be interested in reading a review about on a couple of years ago where I played the string bass at our local dinner theater here.

    Here is the link.

Theater review "Liebowitz Sisters" provides lovely change

That review makes the Liebowitz Sisters sound so interesting. Is there a book on it that I could read?

Oo I have yet to see some dinner theaters here, few except in large/popular shopping areas.

I don't think there is a book on it that has been written. It's a musical where the audiences through the years have been smaller and smaller. It's a great show, but didn't seem to stand the test of time like so many other shows have. So, the run that I played was to be the last, sadly. Perhaps it will be revived again someday...

Remember my question as to what the middle note of the chord is?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 01:27 AM
    Shiang

Oh but it sounds like such a good story. I think it could be revived, if more people knew about it. It seems like one of those things that get lost because not many people are talking about it.

The middle note of the chord is "B"?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 01:31 AM
    Clough

In the treble clef, it would be a "B" and you would be correct. But, remember that the bass clef is different.

Yes, it is a good story for the show. I loved playing for it! Hopefully, it will be revived someday!

I'm so confused right now. I don't think I understood the question. D:

Time to spread the word to friends haha. I want to see a show of that one day.

If the bottom note is "G", then you count up from "G" using the seven letters of the musical alphabet.

Hint: The next space up is "A".
  • Apr 29, 2009, 01:38 AM
    Shiang

So what am I supposed to find? The middle of the circled chord or..
  • Apr 29, 2009, 01:44 AM
    Clough

Yes, the letter name of the middle note of the circled chord in the bass clef. Please use your chart or the keyboard chart that I provided.

    Thanks!
  • Apr 29, 2009, 02:00 AM
    Shiang

Then, it is B isn't it?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 02:03 AM
    Clough

You're 100% correct again! Way to go!

So, what's the letter name of the top note of the chord, please?
  • Apr 29, 2009, 02:24 AM
    Clough

Okay, it looks like you fell asleep on me! It's getting pretty late anyway, and I'll bet that you have school today!

I wish for you sweet dreams and a pleasant sleep! :) We can continue at another time...

    Thanks!
  • Apr 29, 2009, 06:48 AM
    Shiang

Yay! c: Top note of the chord is "D"?

Sorry for falling asleep in the middle. :( I'll get back on after school today.

Thanks. Hope you had a good sleep also. :)

You're correct again, Shiang! The top note of the chord is "D"! I'm proud of you for the progress that you're making!

Haha yay! I'm glad I'm making progress! :D

Yes, you are making progress Shiang! I'm sorry that I haven't been around! Am having some difficulties at my home right now and am living with friends. Am using their computer, so I don't have my usual resources now that I would normally have available to help people musically.

Again, I'm proud of you! I wish that you could hear my new piano and violin student who are both about the same age as you!

    Shiang

That's all right, I haven't been around much either. Oh I see. I do hope the difficulties will be over soon. :)

Ohh that'd be really cool. Can they record like you did with the simple version? :0

    Hi, Shiang!

Am still having difficulties here. Hopefully, they will be over soon! Have found the ways to get them to be over. Just need to be able to do the ways.

I'm working on different ways to that you can hear recordings of things here. It might be possible for you to hear what my private students sound like. I'll work on that.

It would also be neat if I could here what you might be playing as we progress here with helping you to learn how to play!

    Thanks!

Sorry I have been absent for a while.

That sounds good. Ohh that'd be so cool to hear them.

Haha I need to learn how to record as well then so you can hear my wretched playing. :)

    Hi, Shiang!

What I would suggest doing is getting a microphone and attaching it to your computer and then we can go from there.

I'm sure that you're playing is going to be good! :)

    Thanks!

Hey, that's great, Shiang! Now, you can record yourself so that I can hear what you're playing! :)

    Thanks!

    Shiang

Oh I have to take it up with me huh? I'll try to then.

What would you like to hear me play lol?
  • May 29, 2009, 06:54 PM
    Clough
I's like to hear you play any piece! I know that you'll be able to play your song that we've worked on. But, you'll need to practice it, and I need to give you instructions in how to practice.

The strange thing is for me, that I can't find my own microphone. It appears to be hiding somewhere. I know that I didn't take it anywhere outside of my home.
  • May 29, 2009, 11:04 PM
    Shiang

Okay I'll like record soon as I can. May I have the instructions now?

Hrmm take a while off it and it will magically appear! I can't seem to find things when I look too hard lol.
