    Losing weight
Heyy :D I'm 14 and I am 7st 13 , I want to lose some weight. I have been eating only my tea , skipping all other meals and snacks , but I have to eat my tea so my mum doesn't find out. Will I lose weight if this is what I am doing ?

    I don't know what "7st 13" means...

But at your age, you should focus on eating healthy foods; including lots of fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, and foods rich in calcium. Get plenty of rest and stay active. Your body will catch up. You're still very young and some "baby fat" is normal. Concentrate on being healthy first.

Starving yourself will NEVER work and is very dangerous.

If you don't eat, your body will go into starvation mode. That means that as soon as you DO eat something (which eventually you will HAVE to), your body will hold onto every little bit of what you eat.. then you will gain back everything that you lost and more.

If you want to lose weight, you have to eat... but you have to eat healthy. You also have to stay active. Exercise is KEY. Stay active... very active! You will burn off any excess fat that comes with eating. If you are active enough, you can (and will want to) eat a LOT of food. But as long as you eat healthy and continue to exercise or stay active, you won't gain any weight back.

And honestly, you will be in GOOD shape, which is much more attractive than the anorexic, skin-and-bones look

Yes but everyone says 'eat healthy do exercise... etc' but I have tried that and nothing even worked !

The best way to lose weight (if you really need to), is to drop the junk food and white carbs (sugar, white flour, pasta) and eat more vegetables, especially green ones, quality protein like fish, meat, eggs, fruit, nuts and some wholegrains. Try to eat whole foods (things that come from the green grocer, butcher and fish monger) and not things that come in boxes or packets with long sell-by dates. Ditch the chips, pizza, cake, biscuits, fizzy drinks etc.

Be more active. Walk as much as possible, take the stairs, ride a bike if you have one. Switch off the television except for specific programmes. Watching TV tends to make you fat. Go to bed on time. Lack of sleep makes you fat too.

And '7 st 13' is about the same as 50.4kg or 110.8pounds

Actually, 7stone is pretty low for your age. Unless you are really tiny (less than 5 foot) you probably don't need to lose weight. What size is your waist?

How long did you try for? What kind of exercising?

A lot of people expect immediate results... or they think they are eating right or exercising right when they clearly are not.

    It is science... it works.

You are 14... that is going to come into play a bit here and I am not very sure just how. But if you are really committed to losing weight and getting in shape, see a specialist... someone that can teach you what it means to eat healthy and REALLY exercise.

Just out of curiousity, where do you two (natalie and eileen) live that you use that measurement of weight?
  • Jun 11, 2009, 11:46 AM
    natalie1xxx
Okay, well I am about 5 foot 3 .I amnt too sure how big my waist is...

    I live in scotland :D

Ok, I was wondering that too because I've never heard that measurement.

You sound pretty active so it also is likely that you carry a good bit of muscle weight.

    natalie1xxx

Yeah maybe.. but I don't look that skinny
  • Jun 11, 2009, 11:58 AM
    justcurious55

Why are you trying to lose weight? I'm shorter than you, I weight a little more, and my dr still says that my weight is healthy. Plus, because you seem to be so active I imagine a good amount of your weight is muscle. And muscle weighs more than fat. Only drinking tea is a very bad idea. Like the others said, it will ultimately slow down your metabolism because your body thinks its being starved, which it is if you're not eating. Drjizzle had great advice for seeing a specialist and truly being in good shape.

"Skinny" isn't good. Healthy is what you should try to attain.

Why would I need to see a specialist ? And I just want to lose some weight but the ways everyone said about eating healthy and that didn't work
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:01 PM
    natalie1xxx
But most people do want to be 'skinny'
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:02 PM
    justcurious55

Well that's why you should see a specialist... if what you've tried isn't working maybe its time to try something else. A specialist could help you come up with a healthy diet and exercise plan.
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:04 PM
    natalie1xxx

Yeah but my mum wouldn't like the fact that I am 'dieting' so I can't exactly go and see a specialist
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:05 PM
    justcurious55
And also this "skinny" business is another reason to see a specialist. Now I'm beginning to wonder if maybe you have some body image issues. Like someone else said, you should aim for "healthy" not "skinny." especially since you're using a dangerous method to become skinny...
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:07 PM
    natalie1xxx

And as I said , most people do want to be skinny not just 'healthy' I may be a healthy weight but I don't think I look it .
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:09 PM
    justcurious55

So that sounds like a body image issue...
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:10 PM
    natalie1xxx

Well everyone must have it then , nobody exactly says to me oh your so skinny or even your skinny..

In school we done are BMI mines was 18.5 is that big ?
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:28 PM
    justcurious55

I believe that's in the lower range of healthy and a few points below is underweight.

How do you know all this ? Just out of curiosity :)
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:44 PM
    justcurious55

    Know all of what? Lol
  • Jun 11, 2009, 12:45 PM
    natalie1xxx

Like what a healthy BMI is and stuff...
  • Jun 11, 2009, 01:00 PM
    justcurious55

Google it :) for you though you have to Google "child bmi calculator" since the regular one is intended for adults who have finished growing and all. You put in your gender, height, age, weight and it gives you the result (what you probably did in school) and then you can read more on that site or other sites about what your results mean (what they should have but maybe didn't have you do in school).
  • Jun 11, 2009, 01:31 PM
    natalie1xxx
Well it said that I am on the lower scale of a healthy weight
  • Jun 11, 2009, 01:38 PM
    DrJ

Yeah, you shouldn't go off weight either... fat and muscle weigh differently. You should go off BMI

And you don't necessarily need to "diet".. you just need to eat right. That is #1. then you need to BURN the excess calories... that requires exercise. For some, that requires HARD CORE exercise.
  • Jun 11, 2009, 01:40 PM
    natalie1xxx

I meat BMI not weight and I do lots of 'hard core exercise' I even go to kickboxing ! Ha

If you are really this active and you are only consuming tea, you are in for some trouble. I am surprised you coherent & strong enough to even type right now

    natalie1xxx

    I don't mean tea that I drink I mean like dinner . So I am eating ,
  • Jun 11, 2009, 02:08 PM
    natalie1xxx

Well I think I may have a problem , because a while ago I was looking at diet tips and it said to vary your daily intake of calories but when I tried to eat more I felt like I was going to become fat and I stopped eating any more or I made myself sick.
  • Jun 11, 2009, 02:25 PM
    DrJ

So if I go to scottland and ask for some tea... I will get served dinner?

Hmmm.. interesting! I guess we have a bit of a vocab barrier with the stones and the tea heheh

OK.. well, that makes me feel MUCH better! I thought you were only ingesting liquid tea every day lol
  • Jun 11, 2009, 02:26 PM
    natalie1xxx

haha no , tea = dinner
  • Jun 11, 2009, 02:27 PM
    DrJ
The ratio between calorie intake and calorie burn always has to be applied. If you are eating to a point that you feel yourself getting fat, then you need to increase the amount of calories that you are burning.

Either that or you need to watch what kind of calories you are taking in...
  • Jun 11, 2009, 02:28 PM
    natalie1xxx

Yeah... well if I am only eating 'dinner' then it can't have that many calories in it and the exercise I do will burn it off ?
