The steering clicks when attempting to turn left on our Troy-Bilt Super Bronco Lawn Tractor. We are trying to remove the pinion and steering column to check the parts for damage. What is the best way to remove the pinion gear after you've removed the bolt and washer holding it on? Do we need to remove the gear assembly? Thanks!

Most models have it as part of the shaft/column. Suspect the bushing it fits in at its base as worn. Need model numbers to help accurately. Under seat usually.

Pictures attached. It would seem that the pinion is separate on this model. Parts 11 and 12 should be examined for tooth damage and bushings 17 and 36 should be examined for wear.
The correct model is 13AT609G766.

Is there a secret to getting the pinion off the steering column? It looked like it should just pull off after we removed the nut and spacer but we can't get it to budge. Thanks!

Hi,
There are a number of tricks; all very different in nature. A good penetrant could work; most are not what is often recommended. The best are nonflammable, such as NutBuster, Larch Supply, Lawson's, etc.
Another would be a two jaw puller such as sold by Sears for about $25 plus tax.
Another is to use a well-mounted vise and a pair of non-claw hammers. Put the shaft in the vise with the gear atop. Tighten all the way and back off slightly so gear rests on the top of the jaws. Put the nut loosely back on shaft, place one hammer one not and strike the opposite side of the hammer with the second downward.
Combinations could be used.
