Me and this love talking to each other on the phone, and hanging out. But we always find ourselves running out of things to talk about after the first five minutes. We end up being like "yeah" and "wow" and we just run out of things to say. We can have the best conversation, but somehow after that we get awkward and don't know what to talk about. I usuasly end up saying random stuff, such as "I'm tired" or "I'm bored" over and over in between awkward silences. This is a problem for us, because we talk daily. How can we have good, non-boring, conversations? Thanks!

I'm 16, he is 17. He likes watching football, video games, and rock/rap music. That's pretty much what we talk about most of the time. He also is sort of violent, talking about violence and gore (but that's just because he know's it freaks me out and wants to bug me). He doesn't like reading, I try keeping up with baseball (now over), and football, because that's what interests him the most. And yes please:)

Okay. We're going to educate him. Let's start with music. What do you know about the music he likes, and about music in general? Do you play piano or an instrument?

Also, get into college and pro football. Learn the names of the plays. What's his favorite team(s)? Which players does he look up to/admire? Have you been reading about the new discoveries regarding head/brain injuries?

I know everything about the music he listens to. I listen to it, also. I know all the songs he listens to, we usually end up listening to it together. I play guitar. I don't know much about it though. I'm just now starting to play good. I know a little about song writing, I've wrote a few songs. That's all I know and do.

Do you know when someone's singing "pitchy" or flat? Do you yourself like other music too? Do you know chord changes and the names of notes on the scale?

And I'm a big Texas fan, and a Browns fan. I loove football. He's a Cowboys and Texas fan. I talk to him about Romo's injury, and Colt McCoy (don't know how to spell his last name) joining the browns this year. He doesn't admire the players, all accept Colt Mcot, who is now on the Browns team. I'm always tellinghim how he's doing. And the only thing I know about is Romo's broken collar bone.

Yeah, I know what all of that is. And I like Christian music mostly, such as swtchfoot and tenth avenue north.

Do you know the names of the plays and football strategies? You know about the "downs" and place kicking and what errors there can be?

Oh yeah, I know all about interceptions and sacs and etc etc. I'm just a tad iffy on the name of the players. But I know who's blocking and who's running. I understand the big picture, and I know what's going on when I watch it.

I suggest you go to the library and check out several KIDS' books on how to play football. That will give you a good base of information. Then you can graduate to the adult books on football. The Dewey number is 796.332.

Then get a list of players on his favorite team and learn all you can about them--Wikipedia might be good.

Maybe we can get him reading some football fiction books.

I don't like to favor the male and assume he will ignore your needs for conversation, but we have to start somewhere. We know young guys are immature and the world is all about them, so we'll play to that for a bit and hope to turn the tide in your favor. Meanwhile, you will become an expert in football, and that will hold you in good stead with guys for the rest of your life.

Nearly every public library has a web site nowadays. If you live near a city or town, type its name into Google along with "public library."

Give me a hint on where you live!! No libraries??

It will help your conversation because you will be able to walk the walk and talk the talk -- how his team was offsides or fumbled or missed the kick. You will use terminology that will shock and amaze (and delight) him.

I live in the country, the closest one is about ten minutes away but it seriously sucks.. I've been there before and it just.. sucked. Theone after that is like thirty minutes away.

I don't think he will ignore my needs for conversation, he seems like he struggles with it too. He calls me everyday, and we both get to the point where we don't know what to say anymore. And okay:) I like that haha

My mom has this big Cowboys book, it has everything about the Cowboys in it. I could loan it to him and we could talk about that? :) I never even thought about that before!:)

Have him be your football teacher. Start with organizing a team for each of you, name your players, talk about the various plays, and go from there. Create your own fantasy football teams and games.

Do the same with music and a band or orchestra. Create one, name the instruments you'll have, the singers, and what genre of music (country, rock, pop, rap, big band).
