Can I claim my non-resident alien 5 yr old daughter as dependent in my tax filing
Hi, I am a post-doctoral researcher (J1) visa, staying in USA for a last 3 years and treated as Resident alien for tax purposes. I have my wife and daughter (J2 visa) as dependents for the last 1 year in USA. I want to file the taxes jointly with my wife (who has no income and has ssn), and claim my daughter (she does not have SSN, and she is only 5 year old). The tax software is not accepting my daughter as dependent, as she does not have SSN. To apply for tax identification number, we don't have time as there is only a week left for filing.
Can I claim my daughter as my dependent without SSN or tax identification number.

    Please help me

She needs to have an ITIN. You can complete Form W-7 and attached it to your return when you file (with appropriate documents). See Form W-7 instructions for details.

Yes, you can claim her. Attach ITIN application form W7. Mail the return.
