I am currently a full-time college student working part-time. When my parents file their taxes, they claim me as their dependent because they do support me more than 50%. However, my total gross income has exceeded the amount that is required to file taxes. However, I'm unsure if I have to file both state and federal as a dependent, and if so, what forms do I complete. Thank you.

For the federal return, you should file and NOT claim your personal exemption. More than likely, a Form 1040EZ will suffice.

As for the state return, it depends on the state. For example, Georgia allows you to claim your own exemption even if your parents claim you. Other states do not allow this.

I recommend you speak with your parents about this. If they use a tax preparer, that preparer will probably prepare your return for free or at a discount. You can fax or email a scanned copy of your W-2 to your parents, and they will give it to the tax pro. He/she will do the rest.
