    Favorite songs
My life definatley has a soundtrack... almost everywhere I go I have music playing. At home, iTunes is pumpin, laying in bed, my iHome is pumping, in the car-iPod, when I don't have my iPod, my phone has iTunes so it doubles as an MP3 player.

So yeah, music plays a big role in my life, even when I'm in class there's usually a song on my mind... sadly, I'm untalented and don't create music, but I freakin love listening to it.

So yeah, new thread idea... the "Music" section of this website needs more popularity... so what are your favorite songs? Favorite artists? Why are they your favorite? What memories do they stir up?

I guess I'll start... I am a HUGE indie guy... anything acoustic I am probably going to love, I prefer almost every acoustic version of any rock song.

My favorite song at the moment is probably "Strawberry Wine" by Ryan Adams. It tells a great story and chills down my spine, love it.

So yeah, hopefully this thread will take off... if not, then you all suck!

I am also a music lover and find that music is often a close friend, a soft Kleenex, a warm cup of hot chocolate, a knowledgeable professor, a pastor/priest or even a soothing voice, in my chaotic life.

However, I can't take away from the need, at least once a day, for complete silence (usually while I'm in the car) No phone, no radio, no Blackberry, nothing. There is some level of downtime that I seem to need throughout my day. So though I appreciate a great Neil Diamond or Frank Sinatra song to name a couple greats, I also need that quiet.

    Does that mean I suck?

What a nice, friendly post, until your last few words. Lol.
Favorite, heart stirring songs - "Your Song" by Elton John, "The Way You Look Tonight" (favorite singers are Tony Bennett and Michael Buble), "The Lady in Red" by Chris De Burgh, "On the Beach" by Chris Rhea, just about anything by the Doobie Brothers, and so many more.

Much depends on the mood. There are times I just want to listen to early blues artists such as Blind Lemon or Robert Johnson. Sometimes it is the swing band era and I cannot get enough of Louis Armstrong (that Hot Fives and Seven Collection is incredible!). Then you get me into big band and away I go! Lol. Performers such as Coleman Hawkins and Benny Goodman led the way for some of the best music ever (strictly my opinion).

I'll stop there. Music is just part of everyday life.

Hope that did not "suck." You have a superb day!

I am the same way. Sometimes peace and quiet is my favorite song :)

I just LOVE Sir Elton, especially "Your Song" and I love Phil Collins too. The two of them just sweep me away... wooooooosh

But this one puts me in a place that I never want to come back from...

Okay hear are my top 10 songs (I just put together my top 10 movies and I thought that was hard) This was extremely difficult list to put together. I love music so I feel like this really should be a top 100, in no particular order, but I will not punish you with that many. But I need my list to consist of at least 15.

1.) The Winner Takes it All (ABBA)

    2.) All or Nothing (O-Town)

    3.) Even Now (Barry Manilow)

4.) The Way You Look Tonight (Frank Sinatra) :)

5.) Water From the Moon (Celine Dion)

6.) Above All (Michael W. Smith)

7.) I Survived You (Clay Aiken)

    8.) Listen (Dreamgirls Soundtrack)

9.) All I Ever Have to Be (Amy Grant)

10.) The Best of Me (David Foster)

    11.) My Immortal (Evanescence)

    12.) 5150 (Van Halen)

    13.) Gloria (Laura Branigan)

    14.) Resolution (Nich Lachey)

    15.) The Reason (Hoobastank)

You guys are killing me! Almost every song/artist mentioned I just love! I looove Luther, Elton, Rod, Aerosmith, and on and on. In fact I have a list of concerts I soooo want to go to (sadly Luther won't be one :( ) But, and I no a lot of people out there might go booooo... but I love Barry Manilow songs! I would go to Vegas not to gamble but to see Barry, lol.

When I was growing up my Mom and Dad owned a music store, so instead of an allowance and for helping out at the store we got records. My Dad was also in a band, so we grew up listening to band rehearsals, and then my bro started his band... so music is just a part of life like getting up and brusing my teeth... life without it would stink, lol

One song that always stands out for me though is by an artist named Gary Moore, and the song is "Still Got the Blues for You"

Check that one out Allheart, betcha you'll love love love it! :)

Thanks for putting that clip on :D That is soooo up there with the greatest songs ever! Miss Luther a lot! Ruben Studdard does a pretty damn good job of some of his songs though! I have that whole concert of Luthers on dvd, as well as most of the others everyone has mentioned, and now I think I have to spend a night watching dvd's :)

I went to a Frank Sinatra concert when I was in my early 20's... it wasn't my thing AT ALL but we had FREE tickets and thought it would be good for a laugh. Well, I will never forget that concert for the rest of my life. Incredible is all I can say! Weird when you can go from that to Aerosmith and Def Leopard or some of those eh? :)

Hmmmm I mostly like rock, alt, indie, all that stuff.
Going to see the foo fighters later this year :) :) :)
    So excited
Something that is really frustrating though is that so many bands only play 18+ shows here in australia. The one time smashing pumpkins come to australia and its 18+ :s
Some bands I like are the white stripes, xavier rudd (greeny/hippy/bush music its awesome:)), foo fighters, red hot chili peppers, radiohead "your so ing special i wish i was special but im a creep, im a weirdo i dont belong here" :) etc
    :)
Haven't really gotten into much of the older music, though I do like elo and queen quite a bit.

What are some of your FAVE memories that go with the song that you heard at the time?

    Just a couple of mine.

I was leaving my ex, he was trying to get me to stay, I jumped into my car filled with boxes and tears running down my face, he was running behind my car, I turned on the radio, and the song "Shut up and Drive" (not the new one by Fergie?) but by Chely Wright. I don't even remember the hr drive, all I could hear was "shut up and drive"... don't look in the mirror, you out of know him by now... etc. Evertime I hear that song it takes me right back to that place in my life... but it's comforting!

The other one is "Gotta get back" by Shelby Lynne It was around the same period and although the song says... gotta get back, I do, I do... to me it meant I needed to get back to who I used to be! Songs are awesome eh?!

Music is the one thing which pours out of ones soul and heart and lungs into the hearts of others, but also from inside their hearts to them at the same time.
Not sure if that made sense or not but meh...

Sure, that makes sense to me, cal823. Also, the favorite "songs" that one likes don't necessarily have to be those that have words to them. The term "song" or "songs" can have a different meaning for some of us. Sometimes the definition between what a "song" or "piece" is can be blurred and lack true definition in the conventional sense of what they might be defined by using a dictionary.

I love music so much sometimes it hurts a little... Perhaps if it were a teddy I'd squeeze it so hard it's eyes would pop out. There's an image for you.

At the moment I am absolutely loving Bad Religion. I think they are going to be my new obsession, which is going to be costly as they have back catalogue as long as my arm.

I'm at the tail end of an Alkaline Trio obsession, mostly running dry as I own all the songs now :( Well I'm happy but I want more... I wish they'd get off their backsides and do some touring though *grumble*

I have to put a vote in for Fleetwood Mac. They are my chill out music.

Cal can't you get into the over 18 gig with an adult? I used to do that to get into gigs (my poor mum) when I was 14, or are they more strict down there? It's actually really annoying they do that- the only reason is the bars and to make extra money.

I'm into good melodies. Badfinger is my current favorite. Lyrics can be as immortal as the melody. If the melody is in a minor key and the lyrics are sad, I'll probably like it. Grunge falls into this category often. Some of my very favorite music people and groups are: Elton John, Rush, Sound Garden,The Guess Who, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Greig, Vivaldi (incredible in bed), Bread, The Carpenters, Lobo, Cat Stevens, Brian Adams, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Queen and Muse...

Okay. Now, you are hitting on some of the areas in music that might be in my sort of area, at least in the classical as well as the oldie pop scene!

Is this thread only about songs that have words to them? The terms "song" or "piece" these days are often interchangeable concerning their definitions.

Anything musical really, I just relate better to music with great lyrics to portray my mood and whatever else... its great to find a song where the artist is singing about something that I can relate to directly.

However, I do like a great melody, or "piece" as you put it... I adore "Sleep Walk" by Santo & Johnny Farina... I'm pretty sure that's a fifty's song, but it just makes me feel good listening to it.
