Thanks for the reminder of "Big Ten Inch", haha... good song, I love Aerosmith! "Put Your Records On" is by a really young English girl by the name of Corinne Bailey Rae. I like all of her songs. She has such a sweet, almost angel like tone to her voice. To me it's a real "feel good" song. That all depends on my mood though. I can go from new to old, rock to alternative to country, to whatever my mood is at that particular moment. One of the things I have a hard time getting into is rap, but there are a few I can handle. I'm almost embarrassed to say, I'm a big Am Idol "closet fan" too, and there are some really good singers on this yr that I know will go on to put out some great music! Any more closet fans out there? ;)

Yes , I'm a great fan of Pop Idol, both in America and UK. Sadly I can't watch them now because I'm living in East Europe for a while, and I REALLY miss them. I watched the one when Fantasia Burrino won, and Jennifer Hudson was in that, also remember Bo Bice and another guy who was in the last few but I can't remember his name, he was cute though.
I really think Leona Lewis who won the UK X Factor is brilliant. I didn't get to see Elliott Yamin who was 3rd in Am Idol 5th series, but I read about him and bought his album, and it's really good. I know these shows get a lot of flack, but they can be great entertainment :)

If anyone listens to Queen, especially "Night at the Opera" or "Day at the Races" albums, you definitely have to appreciate the orchestral talent, the tightness of the "band" with the orchestra, the incredible voice of Freddie Mercury (bless his soul) and how everything just came together into a perfectly wrapped package. It was classical, it was classic rock, sometimes country, and just had the interaction of so many different instruments. It was a in a class of it's own that just can't be duplicated.

While we are thanking Mom and Dad ;), I'll say thanks too, for giving me my allowance when I was young, in the form of records for helping out at their music store, instead of letting us run around with a pocket full of money. It has really given me an appreciation for music! I feel bad for people who never had the opportunity to realise just how much it can influence and enhance your life!

It's too bad you can't watch! I'm just starting to learn their names this yr, but there are a few really good ones. One girl named Amanda is a rocker, with a kind of gravelly strong voice, and there is a white guy with dreads who has a really unique sounding voice, and another guy that is really awesome too. It's the results show tomorrow, so it will be down to the top 12. I like to pick them early on and see if I get it right in the end ;)

Dispenser by Cursive is lyrically one of my favorite songs and any song by Cursive is awesome. Double Vision Quest, Ice Monster, and Pachuca Sunrise by Minus the Bear are all amazing sounding songs as well as any song by Minus the Bear.

Queen! That group is in a class by itself. Freddie Mercury was a 'Mozart.' It really makes me wonder where things would be musically if many musicians had not died young. But then there are the old guys who are still great, and still alive.

Am I the only one who feels that Rap and many Jazz pieces are not 'music' but definitely an art form? Music to me has a melody. I like Rap that has a melody, usually the melody is in the bass line. Jazz that distorts melody in an established piece just irritates me. Jazz takes talent, but why screw up Jingle Bells? Maybe I missed something?

I've always thought that Jazz is very close to life. We're all given these certain parameters in which we operate, we are given a certain number of notes, sometimes we find ourselves lost in a mysterious musical puddle, but we find our way out... and are left with a chaotic order that is perfectly balanced... No life is ever the same, but they have the same parameters... no two people are the same, but every so often you find someone that you can "play with" that perfectly compliments your piece.

Maybe its simply because my life is a jazz piece at the moment, but I love knowing that one day, it will all work itself out and I'll be looking back on it with wonder and excitement.

Did that make sense to anyone else? LOL! :)

I sooo agree with you about the rap and some of the jazz! The rap especially, is in a class of it's own, and you're right to say it's more of an art form than "music" in my opinion. So you are definitely not alone in your thinking!

My stepson is into a lot of rap, and I challenged him to find me one that I could really get into. I'll have to admit he found a few that grew on me. (In The Air Tonite--Lil Kim/Phil Collins) was one... but then again, that has a melody in some parts and of course it's Phil Collins!

I try to keep an open mind as far as "music" goes... but the fine line between "music" and "art form" is a little blurry sometimes. :confused:
