    Sulphur smell in basement
My wife and I purchased a home that I had remodeled in the summer of 05. The house had been abandoned for approx. 2 years before we purchased it to fix it up. The house was in very bad shaped, but we completely remodeled the house. After some time I started to notice a smell in the house that smelled like sulphur. I went down to the basement which is a walk out basement, but not finished and the smell was terrible. I immediately opened the door and vented the basement. I do have a very old floor drain which I have put a plug in it and the smell still continues. The plug has seemed to not help at all. I flashed a light down the drain and didn't notice any water in there, it was comletely dry. I am stumped as to where the smell could be coming from. Could the smell actually be coming from underneath the floor somewhere? If the drain is plugged with no escape then what else could be causing this? If we leave the door closed to the basement for too long the entire house fills up with this terrible smell. I think that it does seem to be worse in the hotter weather, but although we left the door open for much of the winter when it was very cold.

How did you plug the floor drain and what other traps do you have that may not have a seal?
