Default Judgment since 2002 NO ANSWER from slumlord
I have a default judgment in Bronx Civil Court because I owe rent. This all happened because I fell on the property and could not pay my rent. While trying to find a place, I spoke to the Landlord and he said for me to move out asap and forget about the rent... or so he said... stupid me never got this in writing. Well, since I was in pain after my fall and had numerous visits to doctors, I found out I had multiple injuries that required physical therapy and surgeries. Because of my Landlord's "Who Cares" attitude and my injuries, I decided to sue. Once he found out, he filed a judgment in October of 2002 after I moved out in September of 2002, for all the months I owed rent. Now it's been 5 years and since I won my lawsuit against them, I am trying to pay them, even though with all the hell they put me through, they really don't deserve it. I have called the lawyers who represented them on the judgment, but they no longer represent them. I called the Landlord's office numerous times over the years and have asked them if they were the ones I rented from (since they have changed their name over 3x but kept the address & phone # the same) and they kept denying it. Now, finally someone admitted to them being the landlord of the address I lived at when I fell. All I keep getting is a voicemail where I leave a message stating that I am willing to negotiate payment and my phone #. To this day, NOBODY has contacted me. I decided to put it in writing and am sending it certified tomorrow. I live by PA and this is in NY so I really can't physically go at this time. I will see what turns up. What should I do? They don't want my money, apparently, since they are not calling me back. I called the courts and they said I should reopen the case and if they don't show up, STILL have to pay the entire debt but they would "hold on to it". If no one claims it, it would go to the state... are they CRAZY? I am not a charity!! I am trying to negotiate in order to pay less to these slumlords or have them send me something stating that they are no longer interested in my money... what should I do? I am going crazy over here...
