We recently restored a duplex to its original condition as a single family home. When the previouse owners separated it into a duplex, the even went so far as to separate the water and install a hot water heater for the upstairs. We have removed the water heater (only to have all cold water upstirs, obviously) All the old piping is there and we fed the downstaris hot water line into the line that went upstairs (it fed up to one side of the tub, then merged with another pipe at the tub). We assumed this was the disconnected hot line originally. However, when we did this, we went from all cold water to all hot water, even in the toilet!! I don't understand this because this pipe that we fed with the hot had not been connected to anything in the basement anymore, it just had a faucet head on it now and ran along wise the other pipe that went upstairs. Why is it all hot now and nhow do I fix it so I have cold too?

Look for any recirculating lines that would cross the hot and cold.

What is a recirculating line and how can I find one? Is that possibly what we fed into from with the hot ( the one that was capped with the faucet ?)

A recirculating line is a line that keeps the hot side hot, kind of like you have 2 hot lines.
