Safety Switches on MTD Lawn Tractor
I have a model 13Bi675H062 Lawn Tractor. It will not start and I have been told that the solenoid needs replacing. I purchased one today. Yesterday someone got it to crank by jumping it on the solenoid that is in it but when I put it in gear to go forward, it would not stay cranked. The salesman told me today when I bought the solenoid that I had a problem with a switch. Now all that to ask this: How many switches are there and where are they in laymans terms?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Poorly running engine will sometimes stall when put into gear.
Check the ignition switch. With switch ON, Should have power to one side of coil.
Some Coils will not receive power unless engine is cranking over(A Pulse to a relay)
If the salesman said you had a bad switch, he should be able to tell you where?
Any more info?

Sorry, no. He just told me that I had a problem with a safety switch. I know that there is one under the seat but wondered if there were others.

It is probably the seat switch, the machine will not stay running if it is gear and no one is on the seat. DO NOT THROW PARTS AT IT!! Test it
Save yourself some agony and follow the directions do not skip one because "you have already done it" humor me and you will see the light.
You will need a volt meter and set it to DC volts
-Check the battery for 12.5 Volts
-Check the cables attached to the battery for the same voltage checking for good connections
-Attach the positive side of the volt meter to the + side of the battery and the negative side to the engine block, Still got 12 Volts? If not the ground from battery is bad.
-Now keep the ground on the negative side of battery
-follow positive cable to the solenoid and hook volt meter on the cable going TO the starter coming from the opposite side of the solenoid.
Turn key to "start" position you should have 12 + volts
YES-Check the same way on the starter motor where the cable FROM solenoid connects, If less or no voltage then cables or connections bad, If good voltage then starter is bad
NO- Take positive lead from volt meter to small wire going to solenoid and test for 12 Volts with key in the "start" position, If no voltage to small wire safety switch is telling it not to crank or ignition switch is bad (rare) If it does have voltage the solenoid needs replacing (common)
Hope it helps,
.Don

Do to no answers on safety switches, I would go to MTD Products Landing Page, click on customer service, and it will have questions and answers. You can ask, and you can order manual or download. You can call 1 800 800-7310 also.

You have at least 3 safety switches and as NEW points out the seat switch is most likely the problem. If the seat switch tests Ok then try the blade engagement switch and then the clutch/brake switch. MTD switches are open when they are depressed so just use a continuity tester. They should short when in the resting position and open when the switch is engaged.

Depending on kill or safety circuit, open or closed,Open usually bad due to unplugging or bad connection can disable safety features.
Unplug at seat, insert jumper, Test.
When Jumping, It can be dangerous, Take Precautions. This is not to remain, only to determine bad switch.

Greetings,
I have a 1991 MTD lawn tractor 18hp w/46" deck, 6 speed, low and high range. Over the past year 1st through 4th won't move tractor forward and I have to use position 5 or 6. Is this a problem with the trans or a drive belt problem? The only belts that have ever been changed are the deck...

MTD lawn tractor will not start

I had just finished mowing my lawn. The tractor sat in the lawn for about an hour. When I returned, it would not turn over. It makes a small click noise then nothing. I charged the batter over night, same result in the morning.
It has a Briggs 14.5 HP engine.
Where do I start? Thanks.
