Need Disk Space - where has it all gone?
I'm running out of disk space on my C: drive and I need to know what I can delete. I have cleaned up all the temporary files from the internet. I've also move most of my programs to other drives on my PC. I can't figure out where all the disk space has gone.

I've already installed another hard drive and put anything new on that drive. Can anyone give me some guidance? I'm not even sure where to look anymore.

    Thanks!

It would help to know how big a hard drive you have, how much space is free and what version of Windows. Also do you download music? videos? Programs?

There are many possibilities as to what can be taking up space, but if you give us more info we may be able to pinpoint the solution.

My hard drive is partitioned into three drive c, d & e all start with 1.99GB. My C: drive has 552mb left.

I also installed an extra drive with 22GB of free space remaining. I try to point any new programs/Games to the G: drive. My son downloads updates to games from the internet. He is our biggest space hog.

The PC is a windows 2000 - work PC, used to be window NT. I'm sure there's a ton of old files on the drive but I don't want to delete anything that is necessary to keep the PC running.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Have you tried Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Cleanup.

That will give you a list of things you can delete along with the amount of disk space you will regain.

The C Drive is probably where the OS is. Allocating 2G is not a lot for W2K and I'm not surprised its filling up.

My suggestion is to get a copy of Partition Magic. Then move everything off the D drive and use PM to remove the partition and resize C to use the extra space. You might then want to partition the 22G drive in 2 so you still have C, D, E and G.

You might also want to consider upgrading to Win XP. W2K is not suitable for gaming. Then you can redo your machine completely.

Thanks for the advice. I performed the disk cleanup yesterday. It helped a bit.. but I want more!!

Is the Partition Magic risky to use? It sounds a little scary. I also like the idea of upgrading to windows xp. The PC is pretty old and I keep upgrading it. Are there any restrictions to upgrading to windows xp? Is it time to just buy a new PC??

I've been using PM for years. I highly recommend it. As long as you follow the screen prompts carefully, you should have no problem.

You can get an Upgrade Analyzer at micorosft's site which will tell you how compatible your machine is for XP. If it can run W2K it can probably run XP.

Without knowing the full specs of the machine, though, its hard to say whether it would be better off buying new.

One idea would be to buy yourself an new one and give that one to the kid so he can play to his hearts content ;)

There is a free trial of Partition Magic. Do you think this will work for me or do I need to purchase it?

    Howdy:

The trial will simply show you hopw to do it.. it won't actually do anything.. You have to buy it for it to work..

    Disk Space
    Hi,
Have you considered buying a larger hard drive?
And, just using one hard drive?
They are fairly inexpensive now; and a larger one would do the job for you.
    Best of luck,

Umm Fred, did you read what he said? I quote; "I also installed an extra drive with 22GB of free space remaining." You really need to read the threads more carefully.
