Toro 37" walk behind cluch not engaging
    Good Morning Everyone,

This is my Toro 37” walk behind mower powered with Kawasaki fb460v engine. This mower is about 12 years old and used residentially. This is a manual start with no battery. The magnetic clutch fails to engage or will engage when cold but not when hot. Here are the tests that I have done: When I apply 12v from a battery charger to the magnetic clutch (I have removed the fuse and applied voltage through the wire directly), the clutch clicks nicely. When I measure the voltage coming into the fuse with the engine running, I get a reading of 17v. When I connect everything together and measure the voltage under the load of pressing the engagement switch (the momentary switch on the control panel), the voltage drops to 4.5v and the magnetic clutch does not engage. To me it looks like either the mag clutch is drawing too much power and causing the voltage drop (although it appears to work OK with power from a battery charger) or whatever supplies power to the clutch (is that a magneto or some other charging unit?) is defective. Any ideas? If it is the charging unit, where do I find it and how do I replace it>
    Thanks,
    Eartha

The clutches are a weak link and do fail in the manner described. Unfortunately my experience has been at the expense of the customer "replace it" never getting the time to find out why it failed, I believe that as it wears it takes more to engage it and looses its ability to hold, make sense?

Buy a new one online, shop around.
