    Fight fiercely Harvard
Harvard has joined the Resistance (again) . Last year I posted about the antisemitic protests that were going on at Ivy League schools that were masked as pro-Palestinian protests after Hamas brutally attacked Israel from Gaza .

The mind of the Ivy League protester ,

The Trump administration sent a letter to Harvard detailing conditions they would have to meet to continue getting Federal financing .

To simplify the demands ; Harvard has until August to reform DEI hiring ;reform international admissions to prevent admission of radical antisemitic terrorist supporters .The must stop intimidation of Jews on campus and end programs that would encourage such behavior.

    Letter Sent to Harvard 2025-04-11

A similar letter to Columbia U prompted such reforms .Others like U Penn ;Brown ;and Princeton have also had their funding suspended . Harvard is taking a stand .

Harvard's President Alan Garber explained why Harvard is making a line in the sand about it .

The Promise of American Higher Education - Harvard University President

Harvard is a private University and can teach what it wants. But why should they be entitled to Federal funding to the tune of $2.2 billion ;especially when Title VI of the Civil Rights Act bans federal funds for schools that discriminate?

Harvard has an endowment fund that exceeds $53 billion .
Harvard Endowment Jumps to $53.2 Billion, Delivers 9.6% Returns in 2024 | News | The Harvard Crimson

If they want full independence from government conditions then they should reject all government funding as other independent colleges like Hillsdale College does as policy.
Hillsdale College – Scholarships and Financial Aid

Think about it . Harvard has the endowment ; the government funding and still has the cajónes to charge an admission to students the nears $60,000 /year .

The high cost of admission at these elite schools have been noticed by Congress. In a joint statement ,members of the House Judiciary Committee sent letters to Ivy leagues schools saying these schools are violating anti-trust price fixing laws .

We are particularly concerned that Ivy League member institutions appear to collectively raise tuition prices while engaging in price discrimination by offering selective financial aid packages to maximize profit. These institutions establish the industry standard for tuition pricing, creating an umbrella effect for all colleges and universities to justify higher tuition costs than they could otherwise charge in a competitive market,

January ,as Trump came into office ;12 colleges settled lawsuits over this very issue.

Harvard announced tuition concessions last month .
Harvard says tuition will be free for families making $200K or less - ABC News

But that doesn't answer the basic question . How can they demand complete independence while at the same time taking government grants ?

Note that Harvard is fighting Trump harder than they fought antisemitism on campus.

What may be next for Harvard University amid the federal funding standoff | CNN

My own opinion on this is that if you pay the piper ;you get to call the tune. Let Harvard reject Federal support and then they can teach what they will .

Recall that Bob Jones University had a similar row with the government when they tried to ban interracial marriage on campus. It lost tax exempt statue as a result SCOTUS affirmed the IRS decision.

    Bob Jones Univ. v. United States | 461 U.S. 574 (1983) | Justia U.S. Supreme Court Center

The college reversed it's policy in 2000 . But it took another 17 years for them to regain their tax status.

    Hello tom:

Harvard shouldn't get a tax exemption UNLESS every other institution of higher learning doesn't get one either, and they do. Pursuant to the 14th Amendment where equal protection of the law is spelled out, the government can't withdraw Harvard's tax exempt status unless they withdraw it from everybody..

    You know, that pesky Constitution.......

Not every institution gets them . The Federal government sets rules and "strings attached"

In exchange for the funding, schools must do specified work and follow rules that govern how to spend these funds and administer the programs.

    Grantmaking at ED (MS Word)

Harvard and other schools that allowed hateful protests violated the protections afforded students under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This is not a 14th amendment issue because all schools can be subject to the same penalties .

ED Requires K-12 School Districts to Certify Compliance with Title VI and Students v. Harvard as a Condition of Receiving Federal Financial Assistance | U.S. Department of Education

Columbia U made the changes the administration demanded .

For Harvard it is simple . Comply to the terms or they can reject Federal funding and run an antisemitic school to their heart's content .

Harvard is taking their case to court so we will see how this plays out . But they are trying to make a 1st amendment case of it . Good luck with that .

    Hello again, tom:

Can't remember how to use the edit thing, but let's just take this one issue.. I read the Constitution.. Nowhere does it say you're free UNLESS you're hateful, and you'll decide what's hateful, thank you very much.. Uhh.. That ain't the way the Constitution works.

It's true.. Freedom is hard. Freedom is messy.. But, I'd rather have that. than the alternative.

    Hello again, tom:

And, while we're at it, did Trumps stooge Stephen Miller actually SAY this?

"If you were an American falsely accused of wrongdoing on January 6th it wasn’t merely difficult to get 'due process,' it was impossible. The entire system was rigged against you. All of it. Those persecuted Americans could only dream of the 'due process' afforded illegal aliens,"

Man, oh man, oh man again..

I can't speak for what Miller says . I can say that when it came for hate against Blacks in the South ,the Federal Government made it very clear that schools could be forced to bend to the will of the Federal Government . Are Jewish students not afforded the same protections ?
"The protests were, at times, confrontational and physically violent, and plaintiffs legitimately fear their repetition," Stearns wrote. "[P]laintiffs have plausibly pled that they were subject to severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive harassment."
Harvard 'failed its Jewish students' and must face antisemitism lawsuit, judge rules - ABC News

If Harvard spent just half as much time fixing the problem of antisemitism as they did denying it existed, the federal government would not be threatening to withhold federal funds from the University.
Indeed, the Universities of Vanderbilt, Chicago, Dartmouth, and others have remained clear of the Department of Education’s investigations, not due to any particular political favor but because they seem to consistently enforce internal school policies and comply with federal obligations under law.
The same cannot be stated about Harvard in any measurable way.
While Crimson editorialists, professors, and students create a concocted narrative whereby Harvard can either protect free speech or Jewish students, the reality is almost nothing Jewish students have been experiencing has to do with speech. Rather, it has everything to do with discrimination and criminality.
Harvard Discriminated Against Me and Other Jews. Trump Is Right To Threaten Its Funding. | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson

In one case, a Jewish student was seen being surrounded by protesters who yelled “shame” at him while he was walking to class.
Other times, Jewish students were left hiding inside buildings as protesters raged and called for a Jewish genocide, according to the suit.
Professors would cancel classes to allow students to attend these pro-Palestine rallies, and when “a mob of students took over a campus building to further their antisemitic agenda, Harvard’s response was not to remove and discipline them, but to supply them with burritos and candy,” the suit says.

Meanwhile, Harvard officials allegedly told Jewish students to conceal their identity, according to the suit — pointing to a claim made by Chabad Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi who said the university required him to take down his menorah at night so it would not be vandalized.
As a result, the suit says the students “are acutely aware that, solely because of their Jewish identities Harvard views and treats them as second-class citizens in the Harvard community, undeserving of the protection that Harvard affords non-Jewish students.”
