That is the plan of NY Guv Kathy Hochul and many other blue state leaders. As part of the state budget she introduced a housing compact that would eliminate local control and single family zoning. Her idea is to construct high rise dense housing (low-income, taxpayer-subsidized) by the train stations of small suburban communities. If they don't go along with the plan she proposes a state over-ride of local zoning laws.

Any community accepting HUD help will be required to promote equity in their communities, decrease segregation, and increase access to opportunity and community assets for people of color and other underserved communities. "In other words the way to upward mobility lies through relocation to more affluent communities, where they will no longer be “underserved.”

Towns that don’t meet the requirement for economic diversity will lose federal funding

.In NY if a town fails to meet state targets, the compact will allow developers to build in defiance of local zoning boards in almost all cases.If a town doesn't have the required infrastructure capacity to address this massive increase in population ....too bad. Need a larger cherry picker for your fire department for the high rises ? Buy one , Doesn't matter that previously the community did quite well with a 6 person volunteer force. Need more space in your public schools . Build it , Need a police force when previously a county sheriff was sufficient ? Well the left doesn't believe in policing anyway.

What does this plan NOT do ? Address housing needs in the inner cities where there is a legit affordable housing problem .

And of course there are not enough super affluent communities to make a difference. I suspect in fact that the Dem rich patrons will find a way to exempt their neighborhoods. What this plan really is about is a way to change the demographics of the suburbs so their voting patterns will turn blue.
