I'm going to assume that you have a 1955 stock certificate, and you're trying to determine its cost basis, correct? AT&T has been through many corporate reorganizations over the years, and so if you are trying to determine the cost basis of stock certificate that dates from 1955 it's not as easy as simply looking up a price. The AT&T that existed in 1955 was AT&T Corp, which no longer exists (AT&T Corp was folded into BellSouth and renamed "AT&T Inc." in 2005 - which is why the charts you find on-line for the stock price of AT&T don't go back further than 2005). Even without that complication, over the years it went through several stock splits and one reverse split, it divested 2/3 of its business in 1984 with the divestiture of the "Baby Bells," it divested half of the remaining business in 1996 with the divestiture of Lucent Technologies, and along the way it acquired and divest a number of businesses (NCR, McCaw Cellular and Liberty Media to name just three). All of these actions affect the way that you calculate the stock's cost basis, so merely looking up a price in an old newspaper won't tell what price to use as a cost basis. I would think that AT&T Inc's Shareholder services department could give you a straight-forward answer, and also tell you how to convert your AT&T Corp stock into AT&T Inc.
