Appellate court legal definition of appellate court. Basically you Appeal a decision against you and an Appellate court may or may not review it. The ruling may stand or they may remand the decision back to the appeals court. Kind of like a mini supreme court at the county or district level. Many people appeal to the US Supreme Court, the court can decide not to hear the appeal.

In New York, unlike most other states, I believe the trial court level is referred to as the "Supreme Court". I suppose that the Appellate Division handles the first level of appeal from the trial court level. In this case, the attorney involved resigned fro the bar for that court, and so the Appellate Division approved the resignation.
